PRICED OUT OF EDUCATION

The hidden scandal of student homelessness

This report explores the student housing crisis in Galway, examining how the issue is portrayed in the media and how those narratives shape public understanding. Rather than focusing solely on rising rents and accommodation shortages, it asks how the language used in news coverage influences the way we think about student hardship.

Combining media analysis with survey data from students in Galway, the project investigates whether housing insecurity is framed as an individual challenge or the result of wider political and economic failures. It highlights the pressures students face, from long commutes to unaffordable rents, while questioning the dominant narratives surrounding the crisis.

This video report was produced as part of my undergraduate studies in Global Media and Drama at the University of Galway.
